The “why us” supplement is the essay students most often outsource to AI, and it shows. Ask a chatbot to write why you want to attend a school and you get a paragraph about its beautiful campus, world-class faculty, and vibrant community, which is true of five hundred schools and specific to none. That essay actively hurts you. But there is a real way to use AI here, and it plays to AI’s actual strength: research.
I’m Nico. I’ve coached over 200 students into nearly every top 100 school in the country. Here is how to do the “why us” essay right.
Why this essay is different
The whole job of a “why us” essay is proof that you know the school and fit it specifically. Admissions officers are testing one thing: did this student do the homework, or paste our name into a template? So the essay has to be full of details that could only apply to that one school, tied to things that could only apply to you. AI can help you gather the first half fast. Only you can supply the second.
And the usual rule holds: AI can help you research and sharpen, but submitting AI-generated text as your own is fraud under the Common App. You are using it to dig, not to write.
Step 1: Build a research dossier on the school
This is the high-value, zero-risk use. Turn AI into a fast researcher, then verify what it gives you on the school’s actual site.
Prompt: “I’m applying to [school] for [major]. Help me research it. List specific programs, required and signature courses, professors and their research areas, labs, study-abroad options, clubs, and traditions that are distinctive to this school, not generic. For each, add one question I should ask myself about whether it fits my goals.”
Important: AI can hallucinate a professor or a program. Confirm every specific detail on the school’s own website before it goes in your essay. A made-up course is worse than a generic one.
Step 2: Connect each detail to you (AI cannot do this part)
A list of programs is not an essay. The essay is the bridge from each detail to your specific goals and history. Do this yourself.
Prompt: “Here are three things I found at [school]: [list]. Do not write the essay. Ask me questions about my past experiences and goals that would help me explain why each of these specifically matters to me.”
If you cannot honestly connect a detail to something real about you, cut it. Two genuine connections beat six name-drops.
Step 3: Draft it yourself
Write the essay in your own words, built around those real connections. Keep the ratio right: for every specific thing about the school, a specific thing about you and why it clicks.
Step 4: Run the specificity test
Now use AI as an editor with one job.
Prompt: “Here is my ‘why us’ draft. Do not rewrite it. Flag every sentence that could be copied into an essay about a different school by swapping the name. Those are the weak spots. Also tell me where I name a feature but never say why it matters to me.”
Every sentence it flags is dead weight. Replace it with something true and specific, or cut it.
The traps to avoid
- Generic praise. “Renowned faculty” and “strong sense of community” are invisible to a reader. If a line would flatter any school, it is not working.
- Hallucinated specifics. AI will confidently invent a course code or a professor. Verify everything on the school’s site.
- Letting AI write the connective tissue. The “why it matters to me” sentences are the essay. Those are yours.
