Step 1: Grammar and typos, but keep your voice
Run each finished essay through AI for mechanics, and tell it explicitly not to rewrite.
Prompt: “Proofread this essay for grammar, spelling, and punctuation only. Do not change my wording, voice, or sentence structure unless something is actually incorrect. List the fixes as a short list so I can accept them one by one.”
Accept fixes one at a time. If a “correction” makes a sentence smoother but less like you, reject it. A real teenage voice with one comma out of place beats flawless, flavorless prose.
Step 2: Catch the killer consistency errors
The mistakes that actually sink applicants are not typos, they are the wrong school name left in a “why us” essay, a supplement that references the wrong program, a mismatched word count. Have AI hunt specifically for those.
Prompt: “Check this supplement for any mention of a school, program, or professor. I am submitting it to [correct school]. Flag anything that names the wrong school or a detail that does not match, and confirm it is under [word limit].”
This single check has saved more applications than any grammar fix. Copying a “why us” essay and forgetting to swap the school name is one of the most common fatal errors, and it is completely avoidable.
Step 3: Read it aloud one last time
AI cannot hear your voice. After the mechanical pass, read the essay out loud yourself. Your ear catches the clunky rhythm, the sentence that does not sound like you, the line that runs out of breath. That final human pass is the one that matters most.

- Letting AI rewrite in the name of “polish.” Mechanics only. Guard the voice.
- Skipping the school-name check. The wrong school in a supplement is a silent killer. Always verify.
