How to Use AI for Your College Activities Resume

A college activities resume is a one-page snapshot of what you have done: activities, work, awards, and skills. Some schools let you upload one, many interviewers ask for it, and your recommenders often appreciate having it. Like the activities list, this is factual, structured work, which makes it one of the lowest-risk and highest-payoff places to use AI. The facts are yours. The formatting and tightening is where AI earns its keep.

First, a quick check on whether you need one

Do not force a resume where it is not wanted. Send or upload one when a school explicitly allows it, when an interviewer requests it, or to hand to a recommender. Do not stuff it into an application that did not ask. When in doubt, a resume is most useful for interviews and recommenders.

Step 1: Dump everything, then let AI organize

Get it all out first, messy, then have AI sort it into clean sections.

Prompt: “Here is everything I have done in high school: [dump activities, jobs, awards, projects, skills, hours, roles, dates, numbers]. Organize this into a one-page college resume with clear sections (Activities and Leadership, Work Experience, Awards and Honors, Skills). Use concise bullet points led by strong action verbs, and keep it to one page. Do not invent anything I did not list.”

Step 2: Quantify and tighten

Numbers carry a resume. If your bullets are soft, make AI sharpen them from your real facts.

Prompt: “Make these bullets stronger using action verbs and any real numbers I gave you (hours, people, money, results), without inventing anything. Cut filler words like ‘responsible for’ and ‘helped with.’”

A bullet like “Led a 15-person robotics team to a state final, raised $3,000 in sponsorships” does more than a paragraph of description.

Step 3: Format for one page

Keep it clean and skimmable: consistent formatting, reverse-chronological within sections, no dense paragraphs. Ask AI to flag anything that pushes past a page so you can cut the weakest entries.

The traps to avoid

• Padding. A tight one-page resume beats a stuffed two-page one. Cut the filler.
• Inflating. Same rule as the activities list, keep every number true.
• Sending it uninvited. A resume where none was wanted can read as trying too hard. Use it for interviews, recommenders, and schools that ask.
